The Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society is proud to support an important initiative to preserve the historic Jonesville Institute, built in 1911, along with the Agriculture Shop Building. These landmarks are vital pieces of Lee County’s heritage, and this project aims to protect them from further deterioration and potential destruction.

In August 2024, Society members and concerned citizens united at a public hearing before the Lee County Board of Supervisors to advocate for the preservation of these structures. During the hearing, one speaker passionately remarked, “These buildings are not just old structures; they are vital links to our past, reflecting the educational and social development of Lee County over the past century. Their preservation is essential to maintaining our community’s connection to its history.”
This overwhelming show of community support has sparked the formation of a non-profit organization dedicated to saving these historic buildings. The organization’s mission is to preserve these structures and create a center devoted to showcasing the rich history, culture, and educational legacy of Lee County.
This initiative ensures that future generations can continue to connect with and be inspired by the stories of our past. Stay connected with us for updates on this meaningful project and opportunities to get involved in preserving Lee County’s heritage.
